#4: Marc Jacobs – 2012 Comme des Garçons
In 2012, designer Marc Jacobs appeared on the Met Gala red carpet in a sheer black lace shirt-dress layered over white boxers. Accessorized with black socks and pilgrim shoes, the look was more experimental than elegant. It may have flirted with subversion, but it came across as unfinished and unserious.

The juxtaposition of masculinity and femininity could’ve sparked discussion, but instead sparked confusion. The lingerie-esque lace, visible briefs, and schoolboy shoes were ideas in search of a thesis. Jacobs is a provocateur, no doubt, but this outfit felt like a dare he gave himself.
