Rottweilers descend from Roman drover dogs, refined in Germany to herd cattle and guard goods. Their power, intelligence, and adaptability made them indispensable to butchers and farmers. Today, they serve in police work, search and rescue, and competitive obedience, prized for their loyalty and protective nature toward their families.
They are confident and powerful, requiring firm but fair handling. If they don’t receive early guidance, they may develop overprotectiveness or dominance, especially toward strangers. Their size and capability mean incidents can cause significant injury, contributing to their reputation as potentially dangerous.
