#8: The Day Began with a Broom and a Hose
In the 1950s, nobody started the Fourth with a selfie. They started with chores. Early in the morning, someone swept the porch, hosed down the patio, and scrubbed the picnic table with a rag that had seen better days.

You didn’t host a cookout unless the yard was spotless—even if it meant yelling at the kids to pick up last week’s baseballs or flatten the ant hills. There was pride in preparation. The idea wasn’t to impress, it was to respect the day. It was a celebration of the country, and you started it by getting your house in order.
