#38: Somebody Always Brought a CB Radio, Just in Case
Before smartphones or group texts, there was always one neighbor in the 1970s who brought a CB radio to the 4th of July cookout. It crackled beside the cooler like a secret lifeline to America. Maybe they were expecting a weather update. Perhaps they just wanted to chat with “Bandit” three counties over.

Whatever the reason, it gave the day a certain edge. That crackle made it feel like you were part of something bigger. Sometimes you’d hear a trucker passing through. Sometimes just static. Either way, it was a connection to the open road—and the country beyond the backyard.
