#36: You Called Long-Distance Relatives
Back when “long-distance charges may apply” actually meant something, calling relatives on the 4th of July was both an act of love and a fiscal strategy. In the 80s and 90s, you’d pick up the beige kitchen phone and wish Aunt Betty a happy holiday, knowing your dad was in the corner checking his watch.

“How are the kids? Great! Okay, bye!” It was quick, heartfelt, and tinged with mild anxiety. Yet every family did it. Because even without FaceTime, you made the effort. You reached across states, crackling landlines and all, to say: we’re grilling hot dogs and we’re thinking of you.
