#13: Youth in the Battlefront
The American Civil War saw boys conscripted into various non-combatant roles, evolving into child soldiers as armies needed more troops. They served as drummers, flag bearers, and even on the front lines as the conflict intensified.
An estimated 250,000 to 420,000 boys under 17 joined the Civil War’s ranks, a significant fraction of the fighters. Thrust into battle, these young soldiers had to quickly adapt to the harsh realities of war, maturing far beyond their years.
