#28: President James Buchanan’s Pets Lara and Eagles
James Buchanan, the only lifelong bachelor president, shared the White House with his Newfoundland dog, Lara. Lara was a striking presence, beloved by visitors for her gentle temperament. Buchanan also kept a pair of bald eagles on the White House grounds, unusual pets that reflected both symbolism and personal fascination.

These animals brought warmth to Buchanan’s otherwise solitary household. Lara’s loyalty softened his image as a reserved statesman, while the eagles underscored national pride during tense pre–Civil War years. Together, they created a unique portrait of companionship, balancing affection with a powerful reminder of America’s enduring spirit and identity.
