#7: A Nation of Thousands of Islands
Japan is made up of more than 6,800 islands, scattered like jewels across the Pacific. Yet, the vast majority of its 125 million people live on just four main ones—Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku.

These main islands hold the country’s largest cities, most of its industry, and the bulk of its cultural landmarks. The smaller islands, meanwhile, range from remote fishing communities to untouched natural reserves, many accessible only by boat or tiny aircraft. It’s a geography that blends bustling urban life with serene isolation.
