#9: Bean-Throwing to Banish Bad Vibes
Every February, Japan celebrates Setsubun, a lively tradition where people throw roasted soybeans—sometimes peanuts or sweets, depending on the region—to drive away evil spirits and invite good fortune. Participants often shout, “Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!” meaning, “Demons out! Luck in!”

Families toss beans both outside their homes and at costumed “demons” during public events. The ritual is as much about fun as it is about folklore, with kids giggling, adults shouting, and snacks flying through the air. It’s a playful way to welcome spring while symbolically sweeping away last year’s bad luck.
