#32: The Restoration Left People Divided
The restoration of Grey Gardens by journalist Sally Quinn and Ben Bradlee turned the decaying estate into one of the most admired homes in East Hampton. While the renovation was celebrated, it also erased much of the visual chaos that had defined the Beales’ story. Visitors now saw manicured gardens and pristine interiors where raccoons and peeling wallpaper once ruled.

For some fans of the documentary, the restoration was bittersweet — a beautiful revival, but also the final closing of the house’s most infamous chapter. The Beales’ Grey Gardens existed now only on film, in photographs, and in whispered legend.
