Georgia ranks in the lower half because a higher share of residents are served by water systems with health-based violations. EPA data shows population exposure is above average, particularly in fast-growing metro areas and some rural communities.

Rapid growth is a major factor. Expanding populations put pressure on water systems that weren’t built to scale quickly. While many areas provide safe water, uneven upgrades and aging infrastructure keep statewide risk elevated.
