Johnson came from humble beginnings, starting out as a tailor’s apprentice before opening his own small shop in Tennessee. Over time, he invested in a bit of real estate and built a comfortable life through hard work and his political career, but he never became wealthy by any measure.

After leaving the White House, he returned home with only modest savings and a few properties to his name. Johnson lived simply until his death in 1875, leaving behind a small estate that reflected the working-class roots he carried throughout his life.
